Mural upgrade from Mural.ly to Mural.co to Mural.com

Have you ever wondered how MURAL came up with its excellent domain name Mural.com? Here is the story behind the brand, its name, and, of course, its domain name.

Mural, a San Francisco-based company, developing a digital workspace for visual thinking and remote collaboration, was founded in 2011 by Mariano Battan, Pato Jutard, and Agus Soler.

As COVID-19 has changed how many people work, forcing more employers to experiment with different software tools, it’s not surprising that Mural’s popularity has grown.

Our customers buy a lot from us not because they want to use whiteboards and sticky notes. They buy a lot from us because they appreciate that we help them deploy, track and scale methods that are becoming standard in how they work.

In emails with TechCrunch, MURAL disclosed that it has tripled its annual recurring revenue (ARR) in 2020. And, the company has added “over a million” monthly active users (MAUs) thus far in 2020. How many MAUs did MURAL have before? The company declined to share but did say that “prior to 2020,” its monthly actives were in the “hundreds of thousands.” Up until 2020, MURAL was used by Grupo Reforma, one of the largest print media companies in Mexico (yup, they own the domain name Reforma.com).

And what do we have to know about the history of their name? Well, the MURAL platform was previously known as Murally. The company opted for the domain Mural.ly at the time. The .ly domain name is a ccTLD (country code top-level domain) and the Internet code for Libya. Does that make sense to you? Well, not really, we would say. Luckily, MURAL realized that this domain extension doesn’t make much sense, so they decided to ditch the “ly.” The domain was changed from Mural.ly to Mural.co. In 2020, the company (finally) upgraded from Mural.co to the EBM (Exact Brand Match) domain Mural.com. Now, MURAL owns both Mural.co and Mural.com domains. Instead of redirecting the .co to the .com, they chose to keep it with Mural.ly and Mur.al still redirecting to the .co.

MURAL’s certified enterprise-class cloud-based infrastructure connects nearly 80 percent of Fortune 100 enterprises, including IBM, Facebook, and Intuit, and it has tripled its annual recurring revenue year over year. Since acquiring Mural.com, Mural has closed $50 million in Series C funding in July 2021, an investment that brings the company’s total funding to approximately $200 million and values the company above $2 billion. The platform employs over 700+ people working remotely across 27 countries worldwide, including office hubs in Buenos Aires and Europe.
