Investments in the plant-based industry reached $3.1 billion in 2020 – three times more than in any single year in its history. This week food-tech company NotCo achieved its target unicorn status by raising an astonishing$235 million in its latest funding round backed by Jeff Bezos.
At the same time, one of the world’s largest food providers continues to increase sales of dairy and meat-free foods and launch their lines. Ikea announced that 80 percent of its packaged food offerings and 50 percent of its restaurant meals would be plant-based by 2025. Within the next up to seven years, Unilever has set a new annual global sales target of $1.2 billion from plant-based meat and dairy.

Founded by Ross Mackay and Eliott Kessas in Los Angeles, California, in 2018, Daring Foods produces 100% plant-based chicken that looks, cooks, and tastes just like its animal-based counterpart. The company’s products are dairy and egg-free and contain no palm oil, genetically modified organisms, hormones, or antibiotics. Daring Foods has recently raised $40,000,000 in Series B round, lead by the famous singer Drake and three other investors, totaling $48.8M in funding over three rounds.
Umiami has completed a seed funding of €2.3 million with the support of Centrale Paris, AgroParisTech and the Technical University of Munich, and Umiami Technologies. The Paris-based food tech startup has invented a way to produce exclusively plant-based whole pieces of meat.
Aleph Farms is a brainchild of the food company Strauss Group. The company was founded in Israel by the food engineer and biologist Didier Toubia. Aleph Farms produces lab-cultured meat from non-genetically engineered cells isolated from a cow. The company has received accolades for contribution to the global sustainability movement from the World Economic Forum, UNESCO, Netexplo Forum, and EIT Food. Aleph Farms has raised $236.4M in funding over five rounds, with the latest one of $105M raised on July 7, 2021, from a Series B round.
