October 2021 Funded Startups and Their Domain Name Choices

Overview

Venture capital funding for startups continues to stay strong in October, shared by multiple sectors. The startups that got most attention this month are primarily in fintech, business productivity software, consumer goods and health-tech.

We’ve looked at 352 startups that raised funding in October and their naming choices. What extensions did they choose? What naming trends can you spot? In the next section we will explore some of the most prominent companies in the selection.

Namepicks

Aware

Aware is a SaaS platform that has earned the recognition of Gartner and is used by large corporations all over the world. The startup raised $60 million in a Series C round on October 13, backed by Goldman Sachs Asset Management and eight other investors.

Aware operates on the AwareHQ.com domain name. Biometrics software products global provider Aware owns the Aware.com domain. Adding a descriptive word to the brand name is often used when the company can’t secure the domain name exactly matching their company name.

Babylon

Founded in 2013, Babylon is a leading digital-first, value-based care company. Through its platform and virtual clinical appointments, Babylon provides integrated, personalized healthcare. On October 22, the company raised $230 million, bringing its total funding to over $1 billion.

Babylon has secured the babylonhealth.com domain name. At the time of our visit, babylon.com doesn’t seem to be resolving.

BetterUp

BetterUp is a Fortune 500 company’s preferred choice mobile-based leadership development platform. The startup is based in San Francisco and has raised over $500 million, reaching a Unicorn status. BetterUp’s latest fund of $300 million was raised on October 12. BetterUp.com is the domain name this startup has chosen to operate on; it perfectly matches their brand name, and the .com extension is what visitors intuitively lean towards when typing a web address.

BondVet

BondVet manages several veterinary clinics in New York, specializing in urgent care. Customers may interact, schedule appointments, and keep medical records for their pets using mobile applications provided by the company’s veterinary clinics. Bond Vet secured $170 million in October. BondVet has invested in BondVet.com – an exact brand match .com name. This is the natural choice of most internet users and securing that domain for their business is a clear indication that BondVet is here to stay.

Hubilo

Hubilo is a hybrid event platform that removes the limitations of live events, such as the number of participants, types of speakers, and event sponsors. Last month Hubilo announced that it raised $125 million in a Series B round, bringing its total funding to $153 million in 5 rounds. Hubilo has a domain name exactly matching their brand name: Hubilo.com

Tekion

Tekion is a cloud-native platform for the automotive retail industry. The company has raised $435.1 million in six rounds of investment. Tekion completed its latest Series D funding round on October 5, 2021.

Tekion is operating on the exact brand match tekion.com domain name.

Plume

Plume is a SaaS platform that enables communications service providers to deliver services for connected homes. The startup raised $300 million on October 12, reaching a Unicorn status with a total of $747.4 million in funding over seven rounds. The word “plume” means “feather” in French.

Plume Design operates on Plume.com. Investing in a .com domain name that matches their brand ensures their brand is secure online and makes it easy for their customers, business partners, and investors to reach them.

Pattern

Pattern is a Utah-based eCommerce accelerator that enables businesses to grow faster and sell globally through eCommerce marketplaces, direct-to-consumer (D2C), and other digital channels. At the beginning of October, the company closed a $225 million investment round, giving the company a valuation of $2 billion.

Pattern has secured the exact brand match domain name Pattern.com.

Dutchie

Dutchie is an all-in-one technology platform that runs dispensary operations and offers customers secure and convenient access. The Unicorn startup has closed four funding rounds totaling $253 million.

Dutchie has strengthened its brand position by securing an exact brand match domain name Dutchie.com. The term “Dutchie” refers to cannabis users for a blunt stuffed with marijuana and rolled in a wrapper from a Dutch Masters cigar. The name also sounds fun and familiar making it a perfect choice for the brand. Branding a cannabis brand comes with a lot of challenges and so a strong name proved to be a good investment for Dutchie.

Orca Security

Founded in 2019 and headquartered in Los Angeles, California. Orca Security provides instant-on, workload-level security for AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. The company picked up $550 million in Series C funding round at a $1.8 billion valuation.

The startup has chosen orca.security domain name. .security is a relatively new domain extension from XYZ.COM LLC and is mainly created for businesses in the security area. The Canadian company Orca Security Plus owns the orcasecurity.com domain name.

Highlights

242 startups have chosen the .com extension, with 187 out of 352 operating on exact brand match domains. Securing the perfect domain name for a business is not always an easy task but it ultimately pays off in the long run, if we were to trust entrepreneurs who have invested in premium names.

29 companies operate on .IO extension. .io is the extension for British Indian Ocean Territory. It has gained popularity with startups in recent years, even though, according to many, it faces an uncertain future.

15 have chosen the .AI for their online presence. Technology startups have widely adopted the .AI extension as it is associated with popular technology term (Artificial Intelligence) and offers a lot more availability compared to other TLDs.

16 businesses have decided to use a dash in their domains. Dashes are often included with two-word brand names or added words when the business has to compromise on their domain if the exact brand match name is taken/not within reach.
